Teaching Team


Deland Chan is a Lecturer in Urban Studies at Stanford University and faculty adviser for Urban Studies majors in the Urban Sustainability concentration. At Stanford, she teaches Sustainable Cities, a project-based class where students collaborate with Bay Area organizations on sustainability projects; the International Urbanization, which offers students a comparative approach to US.-China sustainable development; the Defining Smart Cities seminar, and the urban design studio Civic Dreams, Human Spaces. Deland completed her undergraduate studies in Urban Studies and Sociology from Stanford University and graduate studies in City & Regional Planning from UC Berkeley. Prior to founding the Human Cities Initiative, she was a Senior Planner at a community development corporation in San Francisco.


Kevin Hsu is a Lecturer in Urban Studies, with a background in Civil & Environmental Engineering. He also coordinates “Democratic Development,” a global, online education project based out of the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) at Stanford. It is affectionately referred to as "the Democracy MOOC." He previously spent time as a research fellow in Beijing at the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Asian Development Bank. Kevin heads Skyship Design, an educational design studio dedicated to crafting innovative experiences for students. He is currently developing Norway's first MOOC for a global audience, focused on International Development.


Zhiyong Fu is an Associate Professor, Vice Director of the Information Art and Design Department, and Director of Service Design Institute at the Tsinghua University Academy of Arts and Design. He received his B.S. in Engineering from Wuhan University of Technology in 1993, M.A. in 1996, and his Ph.D. degree in 2005 from Tsinghua University. He is co-founder of Design Beijing Lab, which functions as a platform for research, planning, design, and experimentation on smart city and urban media. He was the main designer and speaker of the Smart City International Exhibition & Symposium at the China Millennium Monument Museum during Beijing Design Week in 2013. He directs the Design Now and Maker Space at Tsinghua University, an open incubation platform for design-driven innovation and startups.
